GRIP GRAPPLING RULES
WEIGH-IN
All female categories: 08:30-09:00
Beginner Male: 09:00-09:30
Intermediate Male: 09:30-10:00
Expert Male: 10:00-10:30
• Intermediate & Expert male divisions can weigh-in earlier; but priority will be given to beginner category.
• No additional weight allowance.
• Fighters can attempt weigh-in as many times as they like; up until the end of the allotted weigh-in period. Fighters will be offered the option to move to a higher weight category (additional admin fee £5) if they fail their pre-registered weight.
TOURNAMENT FORMAT
• Double Knockout with repechage (Minimum of two contests for each competitor).
• Awards: 1 x Gold, Silver, & Bronze medal awarded per category.
• Additional sponsor prizes for Expert division winners.
AGE CATEGORIES
• Adult 18 – 29.
• Masters 35 and older (Based on age on day of tournament).
SKILL LEVEL
BEGINNER DIVISION
• 0-2 years training experience/White Belt Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
• No Judo Black Belts, Pro MMA fighters, or National level Wrestlers.
INTERMEDIATE DIVISION
• 2 – 4 Years Training experience in any grappling discipline.
• Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Blue Belts must compete in intermediate division.
EXPERT DIVISION
• 4+ years training in any grappling discipline.
• Purple, Brown or Black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.
WEIGHT DIVISIONS
• Male: u66kg, u77kg, u88kg, u99kg, o99kg
• Female: u57kg/+57kg
METHOD OF VICTORY
SUBMISSION
• Signalled by opponent tapping; (mat or body of opponent) or by verbal submission; unconsciousness obtained through strangulation techniques.
• In novice divisions referee’s discretion maybe used to end a contest in situations that compromise the safety of participants e.g. Hyperextended armbar.
EBI OVERTIME
• 1-Round of EBI overtime; if still tied, either fastest escape time or fastest submission wins the decision.

ILLEGAL TECHNIQUES
General rules all categories: No small joint manipulation/locks, No striking, No squeezing the windpipe.
BEGINNER
• Jumping Guard, Scissor Takedown, Heel Hooks, Neck Cranks, Spine Locks, Toe Hold, Kneebar, Compression Leg-Lock/Calf Slicer, twisting style foot lock e.g. Estima Lock/Sock Lock, Wrist Lock, bicep slicer.
• Leg Reaping will be reset; but not DQ.
• All other techniques legal.
INTERMEDIATE
• Slams, Scissor Takedown, Heel Hooks, Neck Cranks, Spine Locks.
• All other techniques legal.
EXPERT
• Slams.
• If performing scissor takedown one hand must be placed on the ground before execution.
• All other techniques legal.
CLOTHING
• Board shorts (without pockets), spats, vale tudo shorts; a rash guard or t-shirt must be worn.
• Trainers or flip flops must be worn off the competition tatami.
LEAVING THE CONTEST AREA
• If participants leave the contest area within a natural movement or progression and there is a recognised position established; then the contest will be reset within the centre of the contest area. Example: Fighter-1 has established back control but both participants roll outside of the contest area. Action: reset in the centre of the mat with back control.
• In the interests of safety if a submission is near completion but the participants naturally roll outside of the mat area; the match will be restarted in the centre of the mat with a similar control position but without the submission. Example: If Fighter-1 Is attacking an ankle or heel hook from ashi-garami/SLX guard they will be reset in the centre with leg control but without a submission catch.
• If there is no recognised position established; or a neutral scramble, participants will be restarted in the centre of the contest area from standing position.
INFRIGEMENTS
• Serious infringements of the rules e.g. Execution of an illegal technique will result in DQ; fighter’s maybe DQ from the entire competition depending on the severity and intent of the action. Example: A fighter deemed to have struck an opponent in dissent will be DQ from the competition; where as a fighter DQ as a result of misinterpreting the rules would be DQ for a match but allowed to continue within the tournament.
MINOR INFRINGEMENTS
• Non-engagement.
• Stalling.
ENGAGEMENT
• Fighters must make contact before sitting to guard.
• Fighters must re-engage in a reasonable time following any scramble or break in action.
• Fighters will receive a first warning for any minor infringement; any additional penalty points will be shown on the scoreboard and denominated as 1,2,3 etc. In the event of overtime any penalty points will accrue an additional 30 seconds escape time.
SANDBAGGING
We rely on the good will of grapplers to provide honest credible info on their grappling backgrounds.
Please discourage sandbagging.
